As I Glimpse Into My Electoral Crystal Ball

2008 June 3

Just a small point I’d like to make before tonight primaries close and Obama wraps up his needed superdelegates (As we speak he is 16.5 of those away from what he needs, and thats before the polls even close).

Judging by transcontinental freak-out going on right now in the news and across the blogosphere I’d say that tonights results are going to be pretty hyped. Obama’s sure to have a ringer of a speech prepared. Clinton may cry (not because she’s a woman; hell I might in her situation). Thousands of Obama supporters are going to cry; thousands of Hilary supporters are going to cry. It’s been an emotional race.

The news cycle the next couple of days will be dominated by Black citizens talking about the empowerment in what just happened and a bunch of dunderheaded pundits with no emotional investment in Obama will put on fake smiles and follow suit; using disgusting glowing words (only because it is coming out of the pundits) to mark what is a truly momentous occasion. Then when the initial raucous dies down there will be more serious analysis of what it will be like with Hilary out of the race. It will most likely be the kind of exposure that a candidate only ever gets in a general election from the nomination convention, and election night itself.

McCain will try to interrupt the news cycle, but I doubt that, short of a VP selection, he’ll have anything new and exciting enough to interrupt it.

What will this mean? Obama will receive a double poll spike, of the kind of spike that usually only happens at the convention; and may end up scaring the bejeesus out of McCain.

This is just my glimpse into the crystal ball, but if I’m right, remember where you saw it first.
