A Sidekick, not a Maverick
Discussing McCain’s voting record, Bob Casey just told the Democratic National Convention, “That’s not a maverick, that’s a sidekick!”
Here’s to hoping that’s the anthem of the next three months. We do a lot of writing about this election here on In One Ear…, but really what this election should come down to for Democrats is just two things:
1. McCain = Bush. McCain said he agrees with Bush on all major issues. He has voted with him with increasing frequency over the past 4 years, as Bush’s popularity plummeted. He supports a failed war and rails against removing troops even as the Bush Admin approves of just such a thing. McCain = Bush and McCain = proven failure.
Our favorite warrior for impeachment, Dennis Kucinich, took aim at just this issue:
If there were an Olympics for misleading, mismanaging and misappropriating, this administration would take the gold.
That one should be easy.
2. Obama is not scary. He’s not radical, nor is he all that liberal. He talks about bipartisanship and crossing the aisile. Radical lefitist liberals don’t do that. Pragmatic moderates do. Obama also isn’t foreign, different, or “other”. He worked hard from the bottom to the top, married a woman who did just the same, and has worked hard for his community right from the beginning. This is a man and a family we can trust. Voters shouldn’t fear Obama’s policies, nor should they fear his background.
Michelle Obama made huge strides towards realizing that part of the effort last night.
If the Democratic machine can churn out those two messages ad infinitim till November, they’ve got this in the bag. And luckily, my hopes are growing as I see that the Dems do have a machine, and that the GOP is scraping for something to fight with. The Dems are organized and tough, the GOP is not. This is something new, and I like it.
To quote Bob Casey once more, “4 more years? How about 4 more months!”
Next up: Hillary Clinton’s speech. Will she say anything helpful?
-Mike

‘Bama be a wolf in sheep’s clothing? That good ol’ Veep candidate Binlinden will make Cheney look like Mother Theresa. ObaWama looks out of his depth, with his fresh face and idealistic standpoint.
Your point about the machine is valid, IMHO. This is an election, not a popularity contest. Pretty boy could be eaten alive by the forces stacked against him. The only advantage he has is Macca is a total doofus.
Please don’t let Hilarity Clinton speak again, she is not doing anything to ‘unite’ the democratic party. She just wants people to remember her for 2012 and 2016.
Wow. That’s a sound bite! Love it!
@Ned
I’m sorry but just wtf are you talking about?
seriously?
and unfortunately, the more I read about Biden’s voting, the more he sounds like a sidekick, to. . . to Bush and McCain.
Lets just hope that if Obama gets the vote, that there are no wolves in sheeps clothing, but @ the same time, can it really get worse than bush? Everything and anything should be an improvement
Obama will make a good leader,
He’s going to govern from the center left and adopt Bill Clintons economic ideas as well as strive to give us all the chance to get health care.
He’s going to give our battered reputation a much needed PR boost around the globe as well as put an end to this costly war in Iraq.
And it sure will be nice to elect a law professor who likes to think threw the consequences of his decisions for a change, after 8 years of Bush signing statements and civil rights abuses I think it’s best we put someone in office that can re-evaluate those Constitutionally challenged items.
Obama is one of the best candidates ether party has put up for POTUS in my lifetime (52) and is the first candidate that I don’t have to hold my nose to vote for.
I honestly think Osama Bin Laden would be a better president than Bush. If that person was in the white house, the first time he seriously stepped over the line there would be an impeachment and he would be gone – no putting the nation through 8 years of lies, deceit, and the robbing us of our rights.
Comparatively, Obama is exactly the kind of candidate we need to undo the damage to our nation wrought by the current band of criminals in there now. McCain is also a criminal (Keating), so electing him is an option I refuse to put on the table. This will not be McCain cuntry.
It’s a good thing that only Americans get to vote.
I’m guesing that comment came from a non-American because no American would make such a moronic statement.
‘Bama is definitely the right way to vote this year but please, let’s drop the idealistic BS. He may luck into being on OK president by surrounding himself with experienced people but the real reason to elect him is because he has the best chance of changing our foreign policies, dropping our quest to deliver democracy throughout the planet, and start seeing that there are really only a small number of religious fanatics in the world and that all the rest are just businessmen.
For the amount of money spent on this “war” we could have purchased Iraq from Saddam. Let’s figure out a way to stop killing our soldiers, create an alternative fuel to gasoline at the pump – so that oil has to compete on price, and let’s begin taking care of our business here at home.
I don’t know why so many people have trouble with Biden as VP. He’s not POTUS material but he’s a great person to get a counterview from. Why not have someone ‘old school’ around for that?
S’bout time we started with the one liners for McSame. The gloves are coming off now I believe. The Dems are finally starting to unload on McCain and I like it!
Mike, a very well written post and thanks for the shout out to my man Dennis.
John McCain was a Maverick when he ran in 2000 and if he could have beaten out Bush for the Republican nomination I may have voted for him over Gore. He is now just sucking up to the conservative wing of the party so let’s face it – McCain’s time has passed.
Obama may be relatively inexperienced, but so was Abraham Lincoln! Besides, that’s why you surround yourself with experienced people. Do the trolls on this site think that the president just decides everything on his own??? If so, then they should be VERY afraid of McCain, as he is not half as bright as Obama, slow on his feet, forgetful, in ill health and headed over the proverbial Alzheimer’s cliff with a red hot temper to boot. A side note; what the dems need to do to tip the election their way is to attack McCain until he gets MAD. He’s a real hothead and when he melts down on national TV people will be afraid to elect him as they SHOULD BE.
I honestly think Osama Bin Laden would be a better president than Bush.
Only a fool would say such a stupid thing.
What is the definition of a failed war?
Sorry, wrong blog. This looks like a loon blog.
Yea, second that. Definitely a loon blog. I especially love the part when the author says, “He’s not all that liberal.” ROFL
Yea, he’s only the MOST LIBERAL senator in the whole senate.
