How Low Can You Go?

2008 September 10

The new McCain spot.

So while you sit there, silenty mouthing “WTF,” asking yourself whether or not you’ve just seen either the most negative campaign spot in a decade, or Obama  has some truly demented concepts on child rearing (Lord, take Mali Ann and Natasha from that crazy home!).

First, let me assure you about the nature of the “sex-ed,” program. The program was actually intended to teach kindergarteners about what is, and what is not, “inappropriate touching” so that small children can recognize when they have been innapropriately touched by an adult.  So McCain is bashing Obama for passing legislation intended to protect our children from sexual predators?

Bravo.

It’s also important to check your sources. The Washington Post article which said Obama is “elusive” on education also said, “McCain has not been forthcoming with any detailed plan; he is said to be preparing one for the fall.”

Fall’s here, has he become any more elusive? You can go to the McCain website and check for yourself, but to my own eyes, it’s full of general abstractions and hazy dedication to education buzzwords like: vouchers, local control, etc..

Why so hazy? Because he actually does support circumventing, or abolishing alltogether, the Department of Education.

Not a strong stand for John McCain.

Rovian attack ads and moving from issues to pitiful diversions. McCain is clearly business as usual in Washington.

In McCain’s defense, however, it was rovian tactics, such as those his campaign is employing against Obama, that sunk McCain’s primary campaign against Bush in 2000 and that sunk John Kerry in 2004. At this point the Republicans apparently do not think that they can win this election by focusing on issues and so their best shot at winning is to stoop to this despicable level and ugly tactics.

John McCain may now be running as a reform candidate and emphatically chant “Change is coming!” but there is simply no change in positions (or lack thereof) in his stances on education, the economy, foreign policy, and campaigning tactics.

Speaking again strictly to his campaign’s dishonorable tactics, if something has worked so well for last eight years then why change it?

Let me ramble a little please. First for any right of center folks that come here and don’t want to click on a HuffPo link (I still feel yucky) I offer this one from none other than CBN. http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/198169.aspx
The program Obama supported was not a bad one. It is also important to remember that BO supports parent opting out of such programs.
Very early on in my blogging I applauded Obama shocking the teachers unions with a comment on merit pay etc. They didn’t like that. Since then he has towed the NEA line but has had some flourishes of challenging the system. So yeah I don’t buy evasive,I don’t think he’ll change anything but oh well.
I am actually a proponent of limiting DOE to the point of near abolishment. I’m big on states, local action. I also support things like vouchers etc. which are cornerstones of the GOP platform.
The ad. I’ll say it’ll probably play well,is not good if viewed by someone who cares (like me).
I’d love to see America shake up the system.
