Get ‘Em While They’re Young…

2009 May 18

The thing that I think about whenever I see these stupid posterboard presentations is – Has Congress not evolved to the level of powerpoint already? But, on to the more pertinent topics, I still have my Spongebob boxers, so what surprises me more isn’t that they have a Hello Kitty credit card, it’s that they actually got caught saying they’d market them to 10 through 14 year olds. I know plenty of fetishizing adults who’d love one.

I think he is using the quote from the Sanrio Inc spokesman out of context. If you listen to how he uses the quote and the actual quote, you’ll see that the Sanrio representative is talking about Hello Kitty product targeting and not the Visa Credit Card with the custom print of a Hello Kitty cover. There’s plenty of adults and parents that you’ll find shopping in the Sanrio/Hello Kitty stores.

I do agree that there’s a problem with predatory credit card lending (or whatever its called), but I don’t think this he does a fair job of using context for his argument.

    You’re probably right Jim.

To be honest, and I hope this is made obvious by my admission about my spongebob underwear, I was more amused by this video than anything. In congress, they could be citing the relevant facts and figures proving that credit card lending is predatory, but instead they spend the time citing a hello kitty marketing campaign as evidence.
